VA REVISES REGULATIONS ON REIMBURSEMENT FOR EMERGENCY TREATMENT OF VETERANS - The U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) announced that it has, through a Federal Register notice, revised its regulations concerning payment or reimbursement for emergency treatment for non-service connected conditions at non-VA facilities. VA will begin processing claims for reimbursement of reasonable costs that were only partially paid by the Veteran’s other health insurance (OHI). Those costs may include hospital charges, professional fees and emergency transportation, such as ambulances. More info here: VA Revises Regulations on Reimbursement for Emergency Treatment of Veterans

ZERO PERCENT INTEREST STUDENT LOAN BENEFIT FOR MILITARY SERVICE – The Department of Defense is collaborating with the Departments of Education (ED) and Veterans Affairs to educate service members and veterans about a significant student loan benefit based on their military service. Federal law exempts members of the military from paying interest for up to 60 months on certain student loans while serving or having served in an area that qualifies them to receive hostile fire or imminent danger pay. Service members and veterans can also apply retroactively based on previous qualifying military service. This benefit applies to direct loans or a portion of a direct consolidation loan made on or after Oct. 1, 2008. Veterans can take these actions to avoid student loan interest: Check your loan type and servicer by logging in to “My Federal Student Aid” at StudentAid.gov/login.

The NATIONAL PURPLE HEART HALL OF HONOR is located in New Windsor, New York. The 7,500-foot facility includes exhibits, artifacts and Purple Heart recipient stories. The Purple Heart is one of the most recognized and respected medals awarded to members of the U.S. armed forces who were killed or wounded by enemy action, and the NATIONAL PURPLE HEART HALL OF HONOR is the nation’s sole repository dedicated to the collection and preservation of the stories of these Purple Heart recipients. The primary way in which Purple Heart recipients are honored and share their stories is through our Roll of Honor electronic database. This database is accessible in The Hall of Honor main gallery and on our website (www.thepurpleheart.com). Purple Heart recipients (or their family) only need to complete a simple enrollment form and send it to the Hall of Honor along with copies of the supporting documents. Enrollment is voluntary and free of cost. More information is available at (845) 561-1765 or Dennis.Sciba@parks.ny.gov
